She's no Wallflower! Emma Watson loses her inhibitions and 'lets it all hang out' for her latest role in coming of age film

By Daily Mail Reporter

She found fame worldwide as the goody two-shoes, uptight Hermione Granger in the blockbuster Harry Potter series.

So it's only natural that Emma Watson should be keen to sink her teeth into something a little more grown-up in her new work.

And it appears the 22-year-old has done just that judging by the newly-released stills from Stephen Chbosky's coming-of-age film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

All grown up: Emma Watson breaks away from the Harry Potter franchise in her new project

Among the scenes that are sure to mark Emma out as having moved on from the innocent Muggle once and for all is one in which she and her co-stars re-enact portions of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Mae Whitman, the Parenthood star who plays Mary Elizabeth in the film, told EOnline: 'We sat around in those Rocky Horror outfits for like four days—just like everything hanging out.

'I wouldn't say it's too risqué, but it's definitely more Hermione than you've ever seen before.'

Little nervous: Emma has admitted that she found the prospect of taking on the grittier role a little daunting

A little different: Emma's character is a far cry from uptight Hermione in The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The film is based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Stephen Chbosky, which provoked controversy with its handling of drugs, homosexuality and teen culture when it was first released.

The story follows Charlie, a misfit teenager who arrives at a new high school without friends - or any idea how to make them - but is taken under the wing of senior student Sam and her stepbrother Patrick.

Emma plays Sam, a free spirit who becomes the love interest of awkward teen Charlie, played by Logan Lerman, who played d'Artagnan in last year's The Three Musketeers.

'I’d been reading scripts since the fourth Harry Potter movie and just really didn’t read anything that I really just loved instantly and then I read Perks of Being a Wallflower,' Emma told Just Jared.

'I was incredibly moved by it and just instantly knew that the movie had to be made and that I had to play Sam.

'Then when I met with Stephen, we just instantly clicked and it felt like I was meeting an old friend and then I met with Logan and I knew he was the perfect Charlie and it was just a really obvious, obvious choice for me,' she said.

Emma also said that the cast had formed extremely close bonds with each other while working on the adaptation of the beloved coming-of-age story.

'The shooting schedule’s been kind of crazy and it’s such a great group of people and we’ve all got so close that we mainly just hang out at the hotel.

'We play music and pretty much everyone as part of the cast is musically talented in some way so we spend most of our evenings playing music and just talking and just being silly.'

The 22-year-old, who is scheduled to return to college in England this fall, also talked about striving to get her character just right.

'I’m a little bit OCD in that I like to know a lot. I realized this with Hermione... I was such a big fan of the books. I knew everything, I mean I’m like a Harry Potter dictionary, I could tell you everything and anything and I wanted to be like that about this movie too,' Emma added.

'I was very nervous before we started shooting... about the American accent. They (her co-stars) went to an American high school, they know what prom looks like, all these little details that I had no idea about. So I was a little neurotic.'

The Perks of Being a Wallflower will hit screens on September 21.
