Top guns, Tom! First look at muscly Mr Cruise as a tattooed and shirtless rock god

By Daily Mail Reporter

Is that you? Tom Cruise is barely recognisable as a tattooed, shirtless rock god

He's the clean-cut family man that usually wears conservative clothing as he walks the red carpet and dotes on wife Katie Holmes and daughter Suri.

But in his latest film role, Tom Cruise is barely recognisable as a rock god.

The 48-year-old is tattooed and incredibly toned as he goes shirtless to play Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages.

The film, due for release next year, is about a girl who arrives in Hollywood at the height of the 1980s rock scene.

In a film still, which was posted on his website, the actor is seen with a rippling torso as he rocks out in just a pair of black skin-tight jeans, motorcycle boots and a studded belt.

His hair is long, a look many of the heavy metals rockers wore back in the era of the 80s.

Tom also makes the 'sign of the horn', a hand gesture popular with rockers all over the world.

And it appears that Tom's new role has found him a fan in wife Katie.

The 32-year-old recently revealed that she thought Tom's voice was great.

Clean-cut: The look is certainly different from the conservative attire Tom usually wears on the red-carpet, like here at the premiere of Super 8 last week

''Tom is such an amazing performer. Yes, we have music in our house and it’s amazing,' she told Access Hollywood.

Tom's new appearance is very similar to Mark Wahlberg's look when he played the character of Chris 'Izzy' Cole in the 2001 film, Rock Star.

The actor slipped into leather pants and also went shirtless as he portrayed a tribute band singer who makes his way to being lead vocalist for his favourite band.

Similar comparisons can also be made in Rock Of Ages.

Tom's co-star Russell Brand also looks like dead ringer for Motley Crue rocker Nikki Sixx in the film.

Brand plays record executive Lonny in a star-studded cast, who include Alec Baldwin and Julianne Hough.

The story follows a young rocker hungry for his big break and a small town girl who following her dreams in Hollywood.

They both end up on the LA rock scene just as a legendary Hollywood venue is facing its demise.

Earlier in the month, Brand tweeted a photograph of Baldwin on the set, with the 30 Rock star also looking distinctly different from his usual TV persona.

Clad in a two-toned denim vest, aviator sunglasses and long blonde surfer-inspired hair, it was certainly a unique look for the actor.

Cruise's look in the film is also a far-cry different from his attire earlier this week when he was spotted spending some quality family time with Katie and adorable little Suri.

The couple looked as though they had rolled off the sofa and straight into the car during the public outing.

Both the actress and her husband were dressed ultra-casually in their comfy leisurewear during a trip to a film studio with Suri.

Transformations: Tom's other co-stars Alec Baldwin and Julianne Hough also look completely different in their costumes and make-up

With her mismatched lilac tracksuit bottoms and peach-coloured hooded top, Katie resembled a scruffy teenager in her outfit which she completed with a pair of grey cardy pull on Uggs and a cream scarf.

Meanwhile Tom didn't fare much better in the fashion stakes, wearing a grey hooded top, navy trackie bottoms with a grey T-shirt hanging out over the top.

He finished off the slovenly ensemble with a pair of Adidas Air Retro basketball shoes and a white fedora.
