X Factor judge Gary Barlow lays into Amelia Lily again as he fights to hold on to remaining act Marcus Collins

'Desperate': Gary Barlow continues to slate rival act Amelia Lily after she was saved last week over his singer Craig Colton

She's been given her second chance on this year's The X Factor, being voted in to replace bad boy Frankie Cocozza less than two weeks ago.

But 16-year-old Amelia Lily's delight at returning to the show is being overshadowed by judge Gary Barlow, who is continuing to lay into the teenager, branding her performances 'out of control' and 'desperate'.

On Sunday's live showdown, which saw his act Craig Colton voted off the series, Gary accused Amelia of shouting her way through her song choice as she battled for her place with a sing-off against the Scouser.

The pink-haired youngster belted out You and I by Lady Gaga as she wore a tiny leopard-print mini dress, while Colton sang the Shirelles' Will You Love Me Tomorrow.

The four judges took the result to deadlock after the sing-off, with Gary and Tulisa both choosing Craig and Kelly and Louis supporting Amelia.

When Gary was asked for his opinion he slated Amelia and said: 'Amelia I feel like you shouted your way through that, while Craig was understated and gorgeous.'

Kelly, while saving her contestant Amelia, was far more generous in her review of the rival contestant. 'Craig I love you, I think you are a beautiful vocalist,' she said.

Louis then sent them to deadlock by saying: 'I've loved you from day one Craig, but I think Amelia is a ready-made pop star.'

But even though several days have passed, Gary is refusing to take back his harsh comments and has now slated his rival act yet again.

Appearing on Friday's Loose Women on ITV alongside his only remaining act and the only male left in the competition, 23-year-old Marcus Collins, Gary defended his critique of Amelia's performance last week.

He said: 'I thought the comment was absolutely right, her performance was very out of control.

'We’re watching high emotion on a programme like this and this to me is when stars really shine. When the pressure is on, you really see what someone’s about and for me Craig really stole that performance.

'It was very, very understated and actually reeked of experience to me. Her’s seemed to be very desperate.'

But despite his harsh comments, the 40-year-old is adamant he never intended to take over Simon Cowell's 'Mr. Nasty' character when he took over from the music mogul on the panel.

He added: 'I’ve never felt like I’ve been nasty. I really didn’t ever want to become someone who says something for the sake of it.

'But I am really serious about music and when I see something on TV I am critical in my head anyway, so I have been used to hearing things and picking them to pieces for years.

'When I see someone that walks onto a stage, I hope I can be constructive.'

The X Factor contestants were joined by Canadian crooner Bryan Adams on Sunday's live showdown, and even the When You're Gone hitmaker is backing Amelia to win the competition, despite the former blonde originally being the first to be voted off the live shows.

Gary's comments come as the judges and remaining contestants prepare for this weekend's quarter finals, which will see the remaining five singing two songs each on Saturday's episode.

Amelia will be joined by Gary's act Marcus, as well as Tulisa's group Little Mix and Kelly Rowland's girls Misha B and Janet Devlin, who battle it out for a place in the semi-finals.
