The 21-year-old moved into hotel after a firework was let off in the bathroom at his £3 million rented home

He earns £100,000-a-week and is infamous for his eccentric behaviour.

But in a bizarre display of his bloated wealth, Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has spent £55,000 in just eight weeks after checking into a luxury hotel – and all because he broke a window at his house.

The 21-year-old Italian has moved into the Presidential Suite at the Manchester Hilton hotel after a firework was let off in the bathroom at his £3 million rented home in October.

Firefighters were forced to tackle a blaze that wrecked the first floor bathroom and a room directly below at the property in Manchester’s stockbroker belt.

The star and his friends escaped unhurt after fleeing the fire at 1am, just 36 hours before Balotelli and his team-mates faced their most important game of the season – against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Bathroom towels were set on fire and the flames spread but Balotelli has insisted that he did not cause the blaze and that the offending firework was let off by his friends.

The damage, said by Balotelli to have been caused by a friend’s high jinks, gutted the bathroom at the four-bedroom house in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire.

Balotelli now faces a £400,000 bill for the repairs as his landlord wants the footballer to pay for the damages himself rather than go through insurance.

However, the damage has still not been fixed and the multi-millionaire, who transferred to Manchester City from Inter Milan for £24 million in August 2010, is now staying in the hotel suite which costs £979 a night.

The Hilton website boasts that the Presidential suite is separated into four zones – ‘work, living, dining and relaxation - creating luxury environments for both work and play’.

It adds: ‘All areas, including two bedrooms and two bathrooms, are welcoming and stylish, and boast state-of-the-art features including a flat screen TV and a monsoon shower. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide wonderful views and natural light throughout the spacious suite. Guest can also enjoy access to the hotel’s Executive Lounge.’

Onlookers have also reported that the young sportsman has been allowed to permanently leave his white Maserati parked right outside the hotel in a drop-off zone, with staff apparently unable to persuade him to use the guest car park.

Throughout his tenure at Manchester City, Balotelli, who earns £5.8 million a year after taxes, has proved himself to be a spendthrift.

He has been at the centre of numerous controversies since arriving in England, prompting him to once unveil a t-shirt at the end of a game that read ‘Why Always Me?’ .

This week alone it was reported that Balotelli is facing a possible fine from Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini after he broke a club curfew less than 48 hours before Monday’s clash with Chelsea.

Balotelli, who was recently given permission by Mancini to visit a Naples restaurant for a pizza with his girlfriend on the eve of City’s Champions League defeat to Napoli last month, left a city-centre restaurant after midnight on Saturday before reporting for training at Carrington on Sunday morning.

The footballer, who was not drinking, signed autographs and posed for pictures with fellow diners at the Zouk Indian restaurant after being involved in a playful sword-fight with rolling pins with a friend in the popular restaurant.

First-team players are expected to observe a curfew 48 hours prior to a competitive fixture, and Balotelli is expected to be given the opportunity to explain why he was out in the early hours of Saturday ahead of such an important game.

Having scored at Old Trafford, Balotelli unveiled a T-shirt which read 'Why Always Me?' in response to the scrutiny he finds himself under due to his tendency to prompt negative headlines.

He was disciplined by the club for throwing darts at a youth team player last season, while he was also pictured trading punches on the training ground with former team-mate Jerome Boateng. He has paid a total of £300,000 in club fines.

In April, it was reported Balotelli had spent £10,000 in parking fines and had his sports car impounded 27 times.

Liaison officials at the club were forced to reclaim the Maserati time and time again as the player was given an average of three parking tickets a day since joining the Premier League club.

Last night, a Manchester City spokesman said they did not comment on players personal lives.

A Hilton spokesman said: ‘In respect of guests’ privacy, we are unable to confirm any guest details.’
